Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Stapleford of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire and husband of Caroline, Isabel Stapleford of Harby, Melton Mowbray. He was invited by a crew to fly with them on a night training exercise on the evening of the 1st September 1941. He should not have really gone with them. Sadly, on the way back, they were attacked by an enemy aircraft. A single burst of fire wounded the pilot and two others. One of them was Stapleford, who died later of his injuries. He was 29 years old and was buried in the Churchyard at St. Stephens Church in Fradley. (Row 1, Grave 3) (Plot 275)
