On the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, Kay Sayles was just 18 years of age and living with her parents in Doncaster. Kay joined the W.A.A.F. early in the war and trained as a Flight Mechanic. She was posted to Maintenance Unit 51 (MU51) at R.A.F. Lichfield. She stayed here for the rest of the war. She became a very active member of the R.A.F. Lichfied Association, which was set up to remember the people who served at Lichfield during the war. She also did a lot of charity work in later life for which she was the proud recipient of an MBE. She died at the age of 95, on 30th November 2016.
