Gordon joined the R.A.F. where he became a navigator. He trained at R.A.F. Lichfield and then joined 103 Squadron. He became very famous in 1942. On the 5th of October, he was involved in an attack on Aachen. On the way back home, his aircraft was hit by a German fighter plane and crashed in Belgium. There were Germans all around, but Gordon managed with the help of the people of the Comet Line to get into Spain. He eventually managed to return home. He wrote a book about his escape called E.T.A.
