He was injured in a terrible training accident on the 4th of August 1943. Wellington X HE 703 had taken off from Lichfield at 23.50 on the night of the 4th. of August 1943. The port engine failed and the aircraft lost power, crashing into Walton Road in Cheshire. The bomber burst into flames. Two of the crew were killed. Pilot Officer Luther managed to survive and went on to serve with 7 Squadron, but very sadly was killed in the Summer of 1944.
