Eleanor was born on 1st February 1915, in Denbury, Devon, into a very wealthy family. She joined Yapton Flying Club in Ford, West Sussex in 1937, with her lessons paid for by her grandmother. During WW2, she served in the Air Transport Auxiliary which needed pilots to deliver aircraft around the country. It was a very dangerous job, but Lettice was a brilliant pilot. She flew planes to RAF Lichfield on a number of occasions and became quite famous 1942, when she met Eleanor Roosevelt (wife of the American President). She survived the war and died at the age of 99, on 21st July 2014.
