The five crew members, three R.A.A.F. men and two R. A.F. took off from Lichfield on 22nd July 1943, for a navigation exercise which involved flying over the sea. The weather was good and wireless signals received from the aircraft gave no hint of trouble. However, the aircraft failed to return back to Lichfield. Nobody knew what had happened to them. They are all remembered on the Runnymede Memorial.
