Joan was born in 1914 into a very wealthy family and after travelling to Switzerland and Singapore, she began learning to fly at the age of 21. When she joined the A.T.A., she was responsible for delivering both new and damaged aircraft to airfields around the country and she visited RAF Lichfield many times. She regularly flew Spitfires from RAF Cosford to RAF Lichfield. She survived the war, returned to Singapore for many years, then returned to England in 1958. She died at the age of 80 in 1994. She has a tree planted in her memory at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas.
