DETAILS OF ACCIDENT.
Wellington Bomber 1A P9216 took off from R.A.F. Lichfield for dual circuit training,
practising how to take off and land. It was wrecked at 15.15, after breaking its
undercarriage on touch down.
Sgt. A.H. Ashwood of the R.A.F. was very badly burned and was rushed to the
Emergency Hospital at Burntwood. He died later that evening at 23.40 hours. He
was the first airman to die at R.A.F. Lichfield during the Second World War. He
came from Margate which was his home town, so he was buried there.
