DETAILS OF ACCIDENT
Took off from RAF Lichfield on 4 August 1943, for a night navigation exercise. At about 23.50, while flying at 13.000 feet, the front oil retainer on the port engine ran dry and the unit failed. Soon afterwards, the starboard engine lost power. The bomber crashed into Walton Road, Sale in Cheshire. F/S Newell was injured but survived this time. However, he was to die serving in 460 Squadron.
